The Giants/Josh Brown Debacle
Where do I even begin? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what’s going on with the Giants and Josh Brown this week. But just in case you’re Patrick from Spongebob (he lives under a rock, get it (it’s Friday and my team supports wife beaters, leave me alone)), here’s the gist. Josh Brown, a kicker for the New York Giants, is a terrible person who beats his wife. It even got so bad during the Pro Bowl that NFL security, yes, NFL, you read that right, had to move his wife and child to another room, which means they knew about it. And he only got suspended one game. Pan to Ray Rice is on his couch in Jersey unemployed. Tom Brady got four games for allegedly deflating some BALLS. How about deflating your wife’s face? One game!
Then more information came out, where Josh Brown admitted he did it, and the Giants admit that he had told them about it in the past. The past. As in, they knew he did this and continued to employ him. You’d think “that sounds bad! But surely once this became public knowledge the general public’s disgust would be enough for the Giants to release this terrible excuse for a human, right?” Well you’d be wrong, you naïve dumb person who must not watch enough football to realize how fucking awful and hypocritical this league is. Think of how many times Josh Gordon has been suspended for smoking some GANJ. He just wanted to be chill and relax, let his hair down, eat some munchies, and maybe look at the stars and think of how far away they are. That’s all. But nooooooooooo, Josh Brown can legitimately put his family’s lives in danger and get a mere slap on the wrist.
So yeah, the NFL is fucked. We know this. But the worst part about this is the Giants’ reaction. It’s easy to say “Fire Goodell” blah blah blah he sucks blah blah blah. It’s another thing to see the franchise you’ve loved your entire life as the villains they really are. Because that’s what they are. As a fanbase, we cannot unsee, unhear, or unknow the Giants’ front office for who they really are now. Ben McAdoo literally said “we’re not going to turn our backs on Josh.” UUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHH WHY NOT???? They’re not totally condoning his behavior but they kiiiiiinda are. What dirt does he have on John Mara? Ben McAdoo? My guess is he walked in on them gettin’ nasty or maybe they’re running a prostitution ring out of the stadium. That’s all I got. Otherwise I cannot even begin to comprehend this. Why continue to support him? It’s not like when CC Sabathia admitted he was an alcoholic and went to rehab and yeah the Yankees supported him and he came back better this season. This is a man, LITERALLY COMMITTING A CRIME. HE SHOULD BE IN PRISON. McAdoo also apparently said that it was tough to leave Josh Brown at home when they travel to London to play the Rams on Sunday, which incomprehensively mind-blowing.
Domestic violence isn’t normally a “condition” that you would want to see someone get help for, if that’s what the Giants are implying they want to do. What exactly is the protocol for getting help? Killing him and hope he’s reborn as a not shitty person? Send him to prison in Dallas and let everyone know he’s a wife beater, hope he becomes someone bitch, and that when he comes out he’s too scared to even look at another woman for the rest of his life? And news flash: you can release him and then STILL HELP HIM. Send him to anger management or whatever the fuck you want to do. Is that a normal thing for people who beat their wives? I genuinely didn’t know there was a way to help those people. I thought usually it was enough of a turn off to not want said person in your life anymore. But that’s what says a lot about Mara and McAdoo and whoever else. Are they best friends with this dude? I could maybe see if you were BFFL4EVA that you wouldn’t turn your back on your friend (unless you’re Robert Kardashian, which I fully supported BTW). But that’s about it. Also, and I know this make me sound awful but hear me out, I could MAYBE understand if Josh Brown was our star quarterback. Like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers caliber (cough Steelers and Rothlisberger cough). But a KICKER? A skinny ass white dude that can kick a ball far? GET RID OF HIM.
But maybe the most infuriating part of all of this, is the Odell factor. Since the season started, Mara and McAdoo have been running their mouths to the media every. single. week. about Odell’s “antics”. Those antics include a little roughhousing on the field with opponents, maybe getting a little too into it in the game, crying on the sidelines (poor babe), punching a net and having it punch back harder, making up with said net, and then riding off to the sunset and making little net babies. The front office constant chatter has funnily enough, been the distraction. NOT Odell’s actions, but them TALKING about his actions. Last weekend, Odell won us that game, killed it, and I thought we’d have a drama free week. But no, like clockwork, McAdoo and even Eli are saying shit about how distracting Odell is blah blah blah, meanwhile Josh Brown is in the corner using his wife’s face as a punching bag. I don’t want to go there but, could this be a race thing? What if Josh Brown was black? Would they be supporting him like this? What if Odell was white? I can’t help but have those thoughts run through my head and I hate even saying it but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
As a life-long Giants fan, besides being obviously infuriated, I’m just disappointed. How do I support this team? I want to boycott them in some way, for my own personal knowledge that I won’t support people who act like this. Maybe I wont go to another game this season. Won’t buy any team gear. Obviously, John Mara isn’t going to cry himself to sleep that I’m doing that, but it would make me feel better as a person. I’m interested to see if Eli interjects. I cannot see him supporting this behavior but at the same time, I also cannot see him going against Mara and McAdoo. He’s a goody two shoes and it’s what I love about him. But this time I hope he grows some balls and says how this just isn’t right. I want to still support the players, because depending on how they respond to this, they haven’t don’t anything wrong. But personally, the best thing that could happen is if no one went to the next home game. People still will. But I wish that’s what would happen. The other thing that sucks, is that this doesn’t look like it’s going to end any time soon. The easy solution was to just cut Brown and move on. But now they’ve made their stance and for now they’re sticking by him. And for now, NFL fans all over the world will have to continue to take their anger out on twitter or in blogs that hopefully twenty people will read.
