The Super Bowl from Hell
Well, it happened. The Super Bowl matchup that every Giants fan has been dreading basically all season. Eagles vs. Pats. Our division rival versus a team so goddamn dominant, with such insufferable fans, that it makes this game basically unwatchable.
Let me be clear. Giants fans are the only fans in the NFL who this is so excruciating for. I mean, most people hate the Patriots, and Philly is extremely unlikeable, so this is a bad matchup for a lot of people. But it is not nearly as excruciating for the rest of you.
As a Giants fan, we basically have to watch the game and hope the stadium just blows up. Rooting for either of these teams is like when I have to take Lebron’s side against Trump. On the one hand, you have the Eagles, probably our number one division rival. The Cowboys are too, but there’s just something about Philly fans. Maybe it’s because of their closer proximity, Dallas is kind of out of sight out of mind. Maybe it’s because of the kind of fans they are. Our history is just too rich. The hatred flows too deeply. Rooting for them simply isn’t an option.
But then we come to the other team. The Patriots. The team with I think, as a Yankee fan, the most spoiled, entitled, and obnoxious fans in all of sports. Their cockiness is nothing less than alarming. They will constantly rub everything they possibly can in your face. It can be week one and they’ll just be bored waiting for the Super Bowl. They’ve won two out of the last three years and I f they win this year, we’ll never hear the end of it.
In addition, Giants fans who are also Yankee fans are in a more unique position than say a Giants and Mets fan. Yankee fans hate the city of Boston more than anything. Our hatred for the Red Sox is part of our DNA. I personally, cannot root for a Boston team under any circumstances. I cannot root for any situation that would bring a Boston sports fan joy. The only caveat to this is if say, a Boston team played Russia. Then I’m all in. But I’d rationalize that as rooting for America.
You know, as I’m looking at the Pats statistics, they’ve only won 5 Super Bowls. Is it just me or is that insane? It feels like ten minimum. That just speaks to how cocky and down your throats Pats fans are. And that’s five rings EVER. They hadn’t even one won before the Brady era. No wonder they don’t want him to retire.
So who am I rooting for? Well, first of all, I wouldn’t use the word “rooting”. I’m thinking of it more as, I want them to lose a little bit less. And that team is the Eagles. I’m sorry but I just can’t root for Boston or the Patriots. Maybe it helps that all the Eagles fans I personally know aren’t your run of the mill Philly fan. They’re great. Every fan base has some outliers. Even the Pats. But basically every Pats fan I know is the absolute worst. So I just can’t do it.
P.s. I am well aware that some of this may sound hypocritical as a Yankee fan, but that is a different topic for a different day.
